In September of 2025 Crescent Energy participated in a multi-stakeholder project that received the IOGCC Chair’s Stewardship Award in Anchorage, Alaska for environmental partnership.

The Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC) Chair’s Stewardship Award recognizes organizations demonstrating leadership, innovation, and collaboration in environmental stewardship within the oil and gas industry. In 2025, the award was presented at the IOGCC Annual Conference in Anchorage, Alaska to the Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) for their work in partnership with Crescent Energy Services, the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Orphaned Wells Program Office, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service, and the Texas General Land Office.
Project Overview
The award-winning project involved the plugging and abandonment of eight offshore orphaned wells, some located more than 60 feet underwater. The operation faced significant challenges, including multiple tropical storms and Category 5 Hurricane Beryl, requiring careful planning and execution to ensure safety and environmental protection. Crescent Energy contributed to the technical and operational aspects of this complex maritime project.
Environmental and Industry Impact
The project not only eliminated ongoing environmental threats from orphaned wells but also demonstrated innovative collaboration between state agencies, federal offices, and private industry. Special measures were taken to protect marine wildlife, including pausing operations when necessary to safeguard protected species and comply with regulatory requirements. The total project cost was $11.68 million, funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Significance of the Award
This recognition marked the third time the RRC received the Chair’s Stewardship Award for Environmental Partnership, highlighting the agency’s expertise in well plugging and its commitment to protecting public lands and the environment. Crescent Energy’s involvement underscores the importance of industry participation in environmental stewardship initiatives and the value of multi-stakeholder collaboration in addressing complex offshore challenges.
The IOGCC Chair’s Stewardship Awards continue to honor projects that advance conservation, innovation, and responsible resource management, showcasing exemplary efforts from across the oil and gas sector.
